¼³¸³¸ñÇ¥ Mission Oregon State University, a land grant institution, promotes economic, social, cultural and environmental progress for people across Oregon, the nation and the world through our graduates, research, scholarship, outreach, and engagement.
·©Å· ¹× ±âŸ»çÇ× * Updated in 2005, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching's classifications of U.S. colleges and universities ranked OSU in its "very high research activity" tier, making it Oregon's only university to earn that premier designation and one of only 96 universities to merit that rating. * The Kaplan College Guide listed OSU as one of the country¡¯s top 25 ¡°green colleges¡± for 2009, in recognition of OSU¡¯s leadership in environmentally responsible practices. * Corvallis was rated the "Most Secure" place to live in the United States in a 2007 ranking produced by the Farmers Insurance Group and Sperling's Best Places. The rankings take into account crime, extreme weather, risk of natural disasters, terrorism threats, environmental hazards, air quality, life expectancy and job loss numbers. Corvallis both took first place overall and first place in the "small towns" listings. * Oregon State University ranked No. 9 worldwide in the frequency that its faculty members' published research is cited by other researchers, according to a study of the 1996-2006 period. OSU was one of five American universities ranked in the top 10. * A ranking of U.S. graduate programs published in The Chronicle of Higher Education in 2007 shows that OSU faculty are exceptionally productive, ranking among the top 10 schools in eight of the disciplines measured - more than any other Oregon institution. OSU ranked No. 1 in wildlife science, No. 2 in fisheries science, No. 4 in zoology, No. 5 in both plant pathology and forest resources/forestry, No. 7 in both pharmacy and agricultural economics and No. 9 in science education. * Officials with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recognized Oregon State University's commitment to "green power" with a 2008 Green Power Leadership Award. It is one of 25 organizations, businesses, municipalites and higher education campuses to be so recognized. * Only two U.S. universities hold the federal land-, sea-, space- and sun-grant designations - Oregon State and Cornell. * A 2007 analysis of the field of coral reef ecology, based on surveys of 5,060 authors from 1,644 institutions in 103 countries over a 10-year period, showed that OSU ranks sixth in the United States and eighth globally in coral reef research cited for its scientific significance. OSU scientist Mark Hixon was personally cited as the leading coral reef expert in the Western Hemisphere and third in the world. The anaylsis was undertaken by the Thomson Institute for Science Information. * In 2006 Corvallis became the first city on the West Coast and only the third city in the nation to receive the "Green Power Community" designation by the EPA. * The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 2008 ranked OSU the fourth-largest college or university purchaser of renewable energy or "green power" through the agency's "Green Power Challenge." The competition included 40 schools and 18 conferences nationwide. * A National Science Foundation survey released in 2006 ranked Corvallis second among all U.S. cities for scientists as a percentage of the local workforce. * The American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education ranked OSU's doctoral program in exercise science eighth among 32 programs in the nation. The program is part of the College of Health and Human Sciences. * "Rise of the Creative Class" by acclaimed author Richard Florida ranks Corvallis second nationally among regions with populations under 250,000 for "creative class" employment. * ScholarsArchive@OSU, OSU's digital service for gathering, indexing, making available and storing the scholarly work of the OSU community, was ranked 29th among the world's digital repositories in 2008, and 7th among those housed at American universities. The ranking is an initiative of the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group belonging to the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, the largest public research body in Spain. * Oregon State University ranks first in the nation in the frequency that its research in Agricultural Sciences is cited in peer-reviewed articles, according to Science Watch. * In terms of undergraduate enrollment, OSU is home to the 22nd-largest engineering program in the nation. * U.S. News and World Report in 2007 ranked the Oregon Master of Public Health Program (OMPH) in community health second in the nation. The OMPH is a collaboration between Oregon State University, Oregon Health and Science University and Portland State University. * According to the online publication CNN Money, Benton County ranks No. 5 nationwide for the highest life expectancy, at 80.93 years. * A new analysis from the National Science Foundation shows that OSU ranks 17th among all U.S. universities in R&D expenditures in Environmental Sciences. In the Pacific Northwest, only the University of Washington and the combined campuses of the University of Alaska rank higher; OSU is the only Oregon institution included in the listing of the nation's top 100 programs. * The OSU College of Engineering is home to the largest and most advanced tsunami wave research facility in the world. The longest "channel" wave tank in North America is also located at the facility, the O.H. Hinsdale Wave Research Laboratory. * OSU ranks among the nation's best 30 universities for the combination of outstanding academics and premiere Division I athletics programs.
